The Story
The non-Cuban Cohiba was registered in the United States by the General Cigar Company in 1978. While sharing a name with the famous Cuban marca, the Dominican Cohiba is an entirely independent product with its own blends and identity, established after a protracted trademark battle that was resolved by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2006. The cigars were produced on a large scale beginning in the 1990s cigar boom, using select Dominican Republic, Jamaican, and Mexican fillers with Connecticut shade-grown wrappers. Mass advertising helped the brand grow into the best-selling premium cigar label in the United States. Today, Cohiba continues to release highly regarded lines including the Cohiba Blue, Red Dot, Black, and the popular bourbon collaboration Weller by Cohiba. As part of the Scandinavian Tobacco Group portfolio through General Cigar, the brand maintains its position as a flagship premium cigar with broad recognition among both cigar enthusiasts and newcomers.
